The Boston Red Sox have not been off to the start many expected, and to make matters worse, Roman Anthony exited Monday's game early with an injury.

The Boston Red Sox have revealed the diagnosis and expected return timeline for top prospect Roman Anthony, who exited Monday's game early after injuring his hand on a swing during the first inning.

Manager Chad Tracy announced Tuesday that Anthony has been diagnosed with a wrist sprain. While the team initially feared a more serious injury, the news brings a sense of relief to Red Sox Nation. For now, Anthony is considered "day-to-day" and will not be placed on the injured list—though Tracy noted the team will monitor him closely over the next few days before making any final decisions.

"We'll see how he responds over the next 48 hours," Tracy said. "It's possible he could still need a short IL stint, but right now we're optimistic he can avoid that and be back on the field soon."

This injury comes at a particularly frustrating time for both Anthony and the Red Sox. The 22-year-old outfielder entered the season with sky-high expectations after a breakout 2025 campaign where he hit .292 with an .859 OPS in 71 games. He also shined on the international stage, earning a spot on the 2026 World Baseball Classic All-Tournament Team after slashing .280/.400/.520 with two home runs and seven RBIs.

However, Anthony has struggled to carry that momentum into the regular season, currently slashing just .229/.354/.321 with one home run. The good news? He was showing signs of turning things around before the injury, collecting five hits in his last four games along with two walks.

For a Red Sox team that has stumbled out of the gate, Anthony's health and production are critical. If Boston hopes to climb back into contention, they'll need their young star to shake off this wrist issue and rediscover the form that made him one of baseball's most exciting prospects.
