The Boston Red Sox provided an update on starting pitcher Ranger Suárez after he exited Sunday's start against the Houston Astros in the fourth inning. Suárez, who had been dealing effectively through four scoreless frames—allowing just three hits and striking out three—was pulled from the game due to right hamstring tightness, as reported by the Boston Globe's Tim Healey.
"Ranger Suarez update: He exited with right hamstring tightness, the Red Sox say," Healey posted on X.
Reliever Tyler Samaniego, who had thrown two innings the previous day, replaced Suárez in the fifth inning and recorded two outs before Greg Weissert took over on the mound.
Before the injury, Suárez had been building momentum. With those four scoreless innings, he improved to 2-2 with a 2.77 ERA and has now gone back-to-back outings without allowing a run—following eight scoreless innings against the Toronto Blue Jays on April 27.
The hope in Boston is that Suárez's early exit was merely a precautionary move. The Red Sox rotation has already been hit hard by injuries, with both Garrett Crochet and Sonny Gray currently on the injured list. However, there is some good news on the horizon: Gray is expected to be activated on Wednesday, while Crochet is dealing with shoulder inflammation but has no structural damage, though a return timeline hasn't been set.
For now, Red Sox fans will be holding their breath, hoping the hamstring issue is minor and Suárez can quickly rejoin a rotation that's already been tested this season.
