Boston Red Sox fans held their breath Tuesday night as slugger Willson Contreras exited the game against the Minnesota Twins. The first baseman was removed in the fifth inning due to low back tightness, casting a shadow over the team's 6-0 loss at Target Field.

The issue arose in the third inning when Contreras fielded a ground ball from the Twins' Kody Clemens. Manager Alex Cora noted the awkward movement immediately. "I saw it. I was like, 'Eh, that didn’t look great,'" Cora said postgame. "He felt it throughout the game, so we decided to take him out."

Postgame, Cora provided a cautiously optimistic update, emphasizing the team's priority is the long-term health of their key offseason acquisition. "We’ll see how he feels tomorrow morning," Cora stated. "Our head athletic trainer feels like it’s nothing serious, but obviously we have to be careful. He’s so important to us... we’ll see how he feels tomorrow and we decide if he goes."

Contreras's potential absence would be a significant blow to the Red Sox lineup. The 33-year-old has been a force since joining Boston, batting .298 with a stellar .935 OPS, three home runs, and 11 RBIs in just 17 games. Beyond his bat, he has provided elite defense at first base, ranking in the 99th percentile in outs above average.

With a scheduled off-day on Thursday, the Red Sox have a brief window to assess and manage the situation. The team and its fans will be eagerly awaiting Wednesday's update, hoping this is merely a minor setback for one of their most impactful players.
