Laurent Mekies spoke with McLaren CEO Zak Brown after comments about Gianpiero Lambiase’s future role. The Red Bull team principal also discusses how his team plans to replace Verstappen’s race engineer

In the high-stakes world of Formula 1, where every move is scrutinized both on and off the track, the recent news of Gianpiero Lambiase's planned move from Red Bull to McLaren in 2028 has sparked a flurry of speculation. Known as "GP" to fans and colleagues alike, Lambiase has been Max Verstappen's trusted race engineer and also serves as Red Bull's head of racing. But his future role at McLaren quickly became a hot topic, with rumors suggesting he might step into the team principal position while current boss Andrea Stella was linked to Ferrari.

Ferrari quickly dismissed the Stella rumors, and McLaren was equally swift in clarifying Lambiase's role, stating he would take on the position of Chief Racing Officer, reporting directly to Stella. On paper, both teams seemed aligned. But Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies stirred the pot during the Miami Grand Prix weekend, telling Sky Sports, "Now GP had an extraordinary opportunity. You know, he's going to be a team principal there." Those words didn't sit well with McLaren CEO Zak Brown, who responded with a laugh, "He knows something I don't, apparently. I've got one, and I've got a great one. I've got the best one in pitlane, Andrea Stella. So I couldn't be happier with Andrea."

To clear the air, Brown paid a visit to the Red Bull garage on Sunday morning, sitting down with Mekies and Red Bull GmbH managing director Oliver Mintzlaff. When asked about the conversation, Mekies laughed off the tension, joking, "It was about Red Bull, he just wanted to taste the Red Bull!" But on a more serious note, he added, "First of all, we talk very often with Zak and with my other colleagues. So it's not related to one thing or another, but certainly none of us wanted to go into a ping-pong about it. We had a good chat about it, like we always do, and we move on."

For fans and followers of the sport, this back-and-forth is just another chapter in the ever-dramatic world of F1 team dynamics. But for Red Bull, the focus remains on the future—specifically, how they plan to replace a key figure like Lambiase, whose expertise has been instrumental in Verstappen's dominance. As the 2028 season approaches, all eyes will be on the Milton Keynes squad to see how they fill those big shoes. And for McLaren, the message is clear: Andrea Stella isn't going anywhere. As Brown put it, "I've got the best one in pitlane."
