After a sluggish start to the season that had many writing them off, Red Bull Racing showed they're far from finished at the Miami Grand Prix. Max Verstappen delivered a performance that reminded everyone why he's still considered the best driver on the grid, even if the result didn't fully reflect the car's newfound potential.
Heading into Miami, Red Bull appeared to have fallen behind the top three teams, with their title hopes looking increasingly dim. But a significant upgrade package transformed the RB21 overnight, giving Verstappen the platform he needed to compete again.
Despite spinning on the opening lap and being forced into an early pit stop, Verstappen fought back to finish fifth. It wasn't the podium the team hoped for, but the underlying pace was undeniable. Technical director Pierre Wache revealed the car had gained nearly a full second compared to its performance in Japan—a massive leap in Formula 1 terms.
"I'm disappointed with the result because it doesn't show our pace," Wache admitted. "But it's good for the team to show that the car is in the mix again. The package delivered what we expected, and fixing some other issues brought out unexpected performance from Max."
When Verstappen has machinery capable of fighting for podiums, he consistently extracts every ounce of performance. His ability to shine in challenging equipment has kept his reputation as the grid's elite driver intact, even as Red Bull struggled early on. In Miami, the car finally gave him a stage to display that brilliance.
The team isn't resting on its laurels. Wache confirmed the next upgrade is coming for the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, though it will be a smaller step due to cost cap limitations. "We have to wait a little bit longer," he said. "Just a small step for Montreal."
If Red Bull can close the gap to Mercedes, Verstappen could become a serious problem for young title contender Kimi Antonelli. The Dutchman's relentless pressure on Lando Norris during the 2024 and 2025 seasons shows exactly what he can do to an inexperienced challenger when given the right machinery. For fans of racing gear and team apparel, this resurgence means one thing: Red Bull is back in the fight, and the battle for the championship is far from over.
