Bob Chesney is building something special in Westwood, and the recruiting momentum shows no signs of slowing down. The UCLA Bruins landed a major commitment on Saturday morning, securing 2027 four-star running back Jayshon Gibson—a dynamic playmaker who immediately becomes a cornerstone of the program's future.

Chesney, who took over at UCLA in December, has been on a recruiting tear since arriving from James Madison. Known for his ability to identify and develop talent at Holy Cross and JMU, he's now translating that success to the Power Four level in the Big Ten. As of Saturday, UCLA's 2027 recruiting class ranks No. 7 nationally—a remarkable feat for a first-year head coach.

Gibson, a 5'10", 195-pound back from Fort Worth, Texas, chose the Bruins over a stacked list of suitors including Michigan, Iowa, USC, Arizona State, Kansas State, and Arkansas. According to the 247Sports composite, he's the Bruins' seventh four-star commit, joining Jackson Roper and Jerry Outhouse Jr.—both of whom committed on Friday. While 247Sports lists Gibson as a three-star, the composite rating reflects his elite potential and the buzz surrounding his game.

"I'm home, we building something special," Gibson told Rivals upon announcing his decision.

The addition of Gibson addresses a key need for UCLA. The Bruins' running back production was mediocre in 2025, but the coaching staff has been aggressive in upgrading the position. They landed Wayne Knight from James Madison via the transfer portal, and now Gibson projects as a potential running back of the future. His high school production is eye-popping: as a junior, he racked up 2,263 rushing yards and 46 touchdowns from scrimmage, adding 387 receiving yards for good measure.

247Sports Scouting Analyst Gabe Brooks had high praise for Gibson's style. "Productive runner at the Texas 5A level who provides sudden downhill juice at a higher volume," Brooks said. "Naturally low center of gravity and consistent urgency that aid in ability to finish above weight."

While UCLA has yet to secure a quarterback of the future to eventually replace Nico Iamaleava, the offensive foundation is taking shape. Whoever ends up under center will have a powerful, explosive weapon in the backfield—and Gibson is ready to make an immediate impact when he arrives in Westwood.
