England director of cricket Rob Key said Ollie Robinson is "one of the best bowlers in the world" after ending the Sussex seamer's two-year international exile.

England's director of cricket, Rob Key, has made a bold statement ahead of the first Test against New Zealand at Lord's, declaring recalled seamer Ollie Robinson "one of the best bowlers in the world." The 32-year-old Sussex paceman has been brought back into the international fold after a two-year absence, ending an exile that began following England's tour of India in 2024.

Robinson's Test record speaks for itself: 76 wickets in 20 matches at an impressive average of 22.92. Those numbers place him among the elite statistically, a fact not lost on Key. "When you look at his record, he is one of the bowlers right up there statistically, among all the bowlers, of all time," Key said.

However, the journey back hasn't been straightforward. Robinson's career has been punctuated by fitness struggles, particularly back problems that hampered his previous two Test appearances against India in Ranchi and Australia at Headingley in 2023. He also missed the entire 2022 West Indies tour due to a back injury. But after a strong County Championship season for Sussex—17 wickets at 26.17 in five outings—the selectors are convinced he's ready.

"What we said to him and publicly is when he's fit and bowling at a decent pace for him, around 82 or 83mph, he is world class," Key added. "We've monitored him a lot. It looks like he's back up to his full fitness, and that's what we required of him."

Robinson's return to the England setup is also a story of redemption off the field. He made his Test debut against New Zealand at Lord's in 2021, but that milestone was overshadowed by the emergence of historic racist and sexist social media posts from eight years earlier. He apologized immediately but was dropped for the following Test. Despite that rocky start, he quickly established himself as a natural successor to the legendary duo of James Anderson and Stuart Broad.

Yet, injuries and other distractions have tested his resilience. During the 2024 India tour, a podcast he produced with his partner, golf influencer Mia Baker, caused friction with the England and Wales Cricket Board and was eventually taken down. But with a fresh start under head coach Brendon McCullum and a clean bill of health, Robinson now has the chance to reignite a career that once promised so much.

As England prepare for their first Test since the 4-1 Ashes defeat in Australia, Robinson's recall offers both quality and experience. For cricket fans, it's a reminder that talent, when paired with determination and fitness, can always earn a second chance.
