New Warwickshire captain Ed Barnard has hailed a "really positive start" to the County Championship season after his side secured a hard-fought draw against the formidable Surrey at Edgbaston.

The Bears emerged with 16 points from the opening fixture, a strong haul that immediately places them second in the early table, just behind Essex. Facing a Surrey side crowned champions three times in the last four years, this result sends a powerful message about Warwickshire's ambitions.

"If you'd offered me 16 points at the start of the game I'd have taken it," Barnard told BBC WM. "We played a very high quality side, but I think we matched them and if anything we dominated the game for a lot of it."

The foundation for their performance was a commanding first-innings display. After restricting Surrey to 328, the Bears replied with a massive 544, built on a superb 144 from Dan Mousley and a 212-run partnership with Sam Hain (94), securing a significant 216-run lead.

Surrey's batting quality shone through on the final day, as Jamie Smith and Dan Lawrence dug in with a record 217-run stand to secure the draw at 447-4. Nevertheless, the fight shown by Barnard's team against the reigning champions provides a "hugely positive boost" heading into their next match away to Sussex this Friday.

In his first summer leading the side across all formats, Barnard also highlighted the squad's growing strength in depth, which created welcome selection headaches. "It's really pleasing to see the lads that got the nod coming through and showing their colours," he said, emphasizing that such competition is essential for a successful campaign. "It's a really positive thing to have that depth."
