Real Madrid's presidential election is officially underway, and while Florentino Pérez remains the overwhelming favorite to extend his historic tenure, the coming weeks could still deliver some drama—and perhaps even a genuine challenger.

The club formally launched the election process on Thursday, unveiling a detailed calendar that will determine whether Pérez cruises into another term unopposed or faces his first real opposition in years. Given his track record—overseeing a period of unprecedented success both on the pitch and in the club's financial books—it's no surprise that many expect him to secure another mandate.

According to the official timeline, candidates can submit their applications between May 14 and May 23. The Electoral Board will approve or reject each candidacy the following day, with appeals due within two calendar days. If only one candidate is validated, Pérez would be effectively re-elected automatically as early as May 24. Should multiple candidates emerge, the board will announce the voting date and location.

Members can verify their eligibility by checking the electoral register from May 14 to May 18, and mail-in voting will once again be available under the club's rules.

The process itself is notoriously exclusive. To run for president, candidates must be Spanish citizens, legally competent, and up to date on all membership obligations—with at least 20 uninterrupted years as a club member. They must also avoid conflicts of interest, meaning no roles at other football clubs or active positions as coaches, referees, or players.

The biggest source of uncertainty revolves around businessman Enrique Riquelme, whose name has been linked to Real Madrid presidential ambitions for years. As CEO of Cox Group and a longtime Madrid socio, Riquelme recently published an open letter stating he meets the financial and membership requirements to challenge Pérez. However, in recent public appearances—including remarks at an economic forum in Mexico—he has sounded far less certain about actually entering the race.

Whether Riquelme steps forward or not, one thing is clear: Real Madrid's leadership landscape is about to be defined for the next several years. For fans and collectors alike, this election represents more than just a vote—it's a statement about the club's direction, identity, and ambition. And as always, the white jersey will be at the center of it all.
