Real Madrid's left-back situation has become a growing concern, and at the center of it all is Ferland Mendy—a player whose talent is undeniable, but whose availability is increasingly unreliable.

On his best days, the French defender is among the elite left-backs in world football. But those days have become too rare. Instead, Mendy has earned a reputation as one of the most injury-prone players in the modern game, and his latest setback has put both his season and his future at the Santiago Bernabéu in serious doubt.

Earlier this month, Mendy underwent surgery for a rectus femoris tendon injury. The recovery timeline is still unclear—his camp suggests three to four months, while other reports indicate it could be five to six months. Either way, he's facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

But the injury itself is only part of the problem. According to AS, Real Madrid are also dealing with a mysterious contract situation that has added to the confusion surrounding the 29-year-old.

Unlike the club's usual practice, Real Madrid never officially announced Mendy's contract extension. The only public confirmation came by accident in September 2024, when manager Carlo Ancelotti let it slip during a press conference that Mendy had already signed a new deal. The club later leaked that the renewal runs until 2027, meaning just one year would remain on his contract at the end of this season. However, Mendy's representatives insist the deal actually runs until 2028, leaving two years left.

This discrepancy matters because it affects the club's planning. With a long-term contract and a significant salary, Mendy represents a major financial commitment for a player whose injury record makes him nearly impossible to sell.

To make matters worse, Real Madrid's other options at left-back haven't fully stepped up. Álvaro Carreras was signed from Benfica last summer for €50 million and is expected to be the long-term solution, while Fran García provides backup. But neither has truly made the position their own.

With Mendy potentially sidelined until late August at the earliest—and uncertainty over exactly how long his contract actually runs—Real Madrid find themselves in a sticky situation. A player who could be a world-beater on his day is now a puzzle with no easy solution.
