Many teams have competed hard in districts, but of course, it’s all about the players who have led their programs that far, though there are highly productive players that haven’t had as much team success. Below are highly productive players who are girls lacrosse Player of the Year candidates, and below, readers can vote for who they believe is most deserving.
District champions and highlights: Lakeland Christian lacrosse wins first title; District highlights
Semis: Lakeland Christian girls lacrosse wins semis; 3 takeaways on the game
Sophomore midfielder Kendall Reber leads a Lakeland Christian girls lacrosse team that won a district championship for the first time in school history, and of course, they are playing in regionals this week. She’s up to 28 goals, 32 points, 74 ground balls and 44 draw controls.
Then there is her teammate in junior midfielder Carly McKeel, who has 29 goals, 31 points, 10 ground balls and 25 draw controls. Both players have led Lakeland Christian to a 12-4 record to date.
Lake Wales junior midfielder Ayvalei Joyner led the Highlanders to a 9-6 record — the program’s first winning season in two years — thanks to her 31 goals, 47 points, 39 ground balls and 28 draw controls.
The Highlanders just lost to All Saints in the district semifinal game last week. And All Saints just went down to Lakeland Christian in the final. Still, the Saints are led by junior midfielder Summer Barfield, who is up to 29 goals, 35 points, 28 ground balls and 29 draw controls on the year.
Barfield's teammate, sophomore attack Annie Baird is having an extraordinary season as well thanks to her 27 goals, 52 points, 34 ground balls and seven draw controls.
