In a poignant display of solidarity, RB Leipzig will take to the pitch wearing black armbands during their Bundesliga clash against St. Pauli on Saturday, honoring the victims of a devastating car-ramming attack that shook the eastern German city earlier this week.
The club expressed their sorrow in a statement on X, saying, "The events in Leipzig's city centre on Monday left us deeply shocked. Our thoughts are with the victims, as well as their families and loved ones, and everyone affected by this horrific attack." This gesture extends beyond the first team, as the under-19 squad will also join in, with a moment of silence planned before kick-off at each match.
"RB Leipzig is thus sending a collective, silent message of sympathy and solidarity with our city," the club added, emphasizing the community's shared grief. The attack occurred on Monday when a 33-year-old man drove a vehicle into a pedestrian shopping street in central Leipzig, striking several people before the car came to a halt. The driver surrendered to police without resistance while still inside the vehicle.
According to Leipzig police, six people aged 21 to 87 were injured in the incident. Tragically, a 77-year-old man and an 84-year-old woman lost their lives, while a 75-year-old man and a 63-year-old woman sustained serious injuries. As the city mourns, RB Leipzig's tribute on the pitch serves as a powerful reminder of football's role in uniting communities during times of tragedy—a sentiment that resonates deeply with fans and beyond.
