The Tampa Bay Rays have done it again. Known for uncovering talent where others see none, the organization may have just found their next diamond in the rough—right-handed pitcher Aidan Cremarosa.
Cremarosa’s journey to the pros wasn’t a straight line. After working out of the bullpen during his freshman and sophomore years at Fresno State, he transitioned to a starting role as a junior. That move proved transformative. In 2025, he was named Mountain West Pitcher of the Year, leading the conference with 112 strikeouts over 95.1 innings. His performance caught the attention of MLB scouts, and the Rays selected him in the eighth round of the 2025 MLB Draft.
What makes Cremarosa stand out isn’t a blazing fastball—he sits around 90-91 mph—but rather his craftiness. He uses a short-arm motion that adds deception and pairs it with an elite changeup that keeps hitters guessing. That combination has been electric in his first pro season. On May 8, he tossed a no-hitter for Single-A Charleston against the Augusta Greenjackets. Despite being unranked, MLB.com now tags him as the Rays’ hottest pitching prospect.
The numbers back up the buzz. Through 34 innings, Cremarosa boasts a 2.38 ERA, 49 strikeouts, and just five walks, with a perfect 4-0 record. As MLB.com notes, “He isn’t a huge velocity guy … but works with a deep mix and a short arm action that adds some deception.”
It may not be long before he cracks the Rays’ top prospect rankings—he’s pitching far too well to stay unranked. The next step? Sharpening his secondary pitches, particularly his curveball and slider. If he can develop those, Cremarosa could force his way into big-league action sooner than later. For a team that excels at finding hidden gems, this one might just shine brightest.
