Why Baltimore's new QB is still haunted by last season.

When you sign with a new team, you want to make a strong first impression. But for newly-minted Baltimore Ravens quarterback Diego Pavia, the shadow of last season's biggest regret is proving hard to shake—and the Ravens might not love what they're hearing.

Pavia, who went undrafted in the 2026 NFL Draft, was the driving force behind Vanderbilt's historic 10-win season, the program's first. He put the Commodores on the map, most notably with a stunning upset of Alabama in 2024. That win gave him national recognition and an identity as a fearless competitor.

But football fans know that in the SEC, what you did last year matters far less than what you do today. When Vanderbilt faced Alabama again in 2025, the result was a decisive 30-14 loss—a defeat that made the previous year's victory look like an outlier and seriously dented Pavia's draft stock.

Now, in a candid interview on The Pivot podcast, Pavia has revealed a shocking detail that changes the narrative entirely: he showed up late to the game. Not just a few minutes late—he overslept for a 3:30 p.m. ET kickoff.

"It felt like a blur," Pavia admitted. "I wake up, and I'm in the stadium already. I kinda delayed the process, I wasn't able to throw the ball pregame, and it's just like, I didn't feel like me that day."

For a quarterback, pregame warm-ups are sacred. Missing that routine can throw off timing, rhythm, and confidence—all of which showed in Pavia's performance. He finished with 256 total yards, one touchdown, and an interception, far from the playmaker who had stunned the Tide a year earlier.

The Alabama loss was one of just two regular-season defeats for Vanderbilt, the other coming against a surging Texas team. Had Pavia been on time and played to his potential, the Commodores might have won either game—and their path to the College Football Playoff would have looked very different.

Now, as Pavia joins the Ravens, that haunting memory serves as a cautionary tale. For a team built on discipline and precision, oversleeping on game day is the kind of mistake that doesn't get overlooked—even if the quarterback is a former Vanderbilt legend.
