Brazilian defender Raul Gustavo etched his name into New York City FC history on Wednesday, scoring his first goal for the club in a commanding 3-1 away victory over the NY Red Bulls. The win not only secured NYCFC's spot in the US Cup quarterfinals but also added another chapter to the fierce Hudson River Derby rivalry.

The 27-year-old center-back, now in his second MLS season after stints with Brazilian giants Corinthians and Bahia, as well as Hungarian champions Ferencvaros, was a force at both ends of the pitch. While his defensive dominance kept the Red Bulls at bay, it was his offensive contribution that broke the deadlock and set the tone for the night.

"I'm very happy to have scored my first goal with the New York shirt, but even happier about our qualification for the quarterfinals," Gustavo said after the match. "I'm a defender with a good offensive aerial ball—in all the clubs I've been to, I've scored goals. Thank God yesterday I was able to score my first one with this shirt."

Gustavo has been a rock in NYCFC's backline this season, starting 11 of 12 possible matches. His consistency has been key as the club currently sits seventh in the Eastern Conference, holding onto the final direct playoff spot in a tightly contested race.

Now, with cup glory on their minds, NYCFC must quickly shift focus back to league action. They return home this Sunday to face DC United at Yankee Stadium, aiming to build on their derby momentum and solidify their playoff position.

"We knew it would be tough, especially playing away from home, but we managed to have a great game and build a deserved result," Gustavo added. "Now our focus is back on the MLS, where we have a tough game at home already this weekend, and we need the three points."

For NYCFC supporters, the sight of their Brazilian defender celebrating his first goal in the iconic sky blue jersey is a moment to savor—and a sign that this team has the grit to compete on multiple fronts.
