Manchester United fans are riding a wave of optimism after the club's thrilling 3-2 victory over Liverpool, a result that not only secured Champions League qualification but also showcased the resilience and spirit that has been missing in recent seasons. At the heart of this resurgence is interim manager Michael Carrick, who has defied expectations since taking the reins. While some doubts may linger, the majority of supporters believe handing him the job permanently is the right move.

However, appointing anyone else at this stage carries just as much risk as sticking with Carrick. What's clear is that the club's decision-makers need to provide him with stronger support—and that's where a concerning issue arises. Recent reports suggest that co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe may have a say in the managerial appointment, a development that should worry fans.

According to The Athletic, Carrick's calm, composed demeanor initially didn't align with Ratcliffe's preference for "alpha" type characters. More recent briefings claim the former midfielder has since won the co-owner over. But here's the problem: it shouldn't matter what Ratcliffe thinks, and we certainly shouldn't be reading about his opinions in the press.

In a well-run club, the owner's role should be limited to financial backing and appointing a CEO. From there, football decisions—including who sits in the dugout—should be left to the experts: the CEO and senior leadership team. What's the point of hiring "best in class" football minds if an owner with no football experience gets a veto on the manager? If Ratcliffe is pulling the strings, then nothing has changed from the Glazers' era of meddling.

The solution is simple: trust the experts to make the call. If they fail, you can replace them. But don't let ego or interference dictate such a crucial decision. Manchester United's future depends on getting this right—on and off the pitch.
