The No. 1 Northwestern Wildcats delivered a statement performance on Sunday, dismantling No. 22 James Madison 17-5 in a Mother’s Day NCAA Second Round showdown. Under a partly cloudy sky at Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium, the top-seeded ‘Cats unleashed an offensive avalanche that left no doubt about their championship credentials.
Northwestern extended its winning streak to 11 games and kept alive an incredible run of 22 straight NCAA tournament appearances with at least one victory. From the opening whistle, it was clear this team came to play.
Madison Taylor was the star of the show, erupting for a season-high eight goals on 13 shots. She wasted no time making her presence felt, securing a hat trick before the first quarter even ended. Aditi Foster chipped in with four goals of her own, while Noel Cumberland added two. The Wildcats’ defense was equally impressive, forcing 12 James Madison turnovers and limiting the Dukes to just 12 shots on goal compared to Northwestern’s 26.
The game opened with both teams trading attacks, but it was Northwestern that struck first. Just three minutes in, Taylor Lapointe found Madison Taylor for a beautiful finish to put the ‘Cats up 1-0. The offense kept rolling when Taylor grabbed a blocked shot just outside the goal and tossed it in for her second score in as many minutes.
James Madison briefly answered when Josie Pell’s shot ricocheted off goalkeeper Cuocco to cut the lead to 2-1. The Dukes won the next draw and had a chance to tie on a free position, but Cuocco made a clutch save to preserve Northwestern’s advantage. The ‘Cats rewarded their goalie immediately, with Aditi Foster drilling a perfectly angled shot under the crossbar to make it 3-1 with 6:38 left in the first quarter.
The defensive intensity never wavered. Madison Smith forced a turnover, and Northwestern quickly turned defense into offense. Maddie Epke positioned herself on the left side of the net and found Taylor inside for another score, giving Taylor her hat trick in just 11 minutes of play.
This was more than just a win—it was a statement from a team that looks ready to chase a national championship. The Wildcats’ blend of offensive firepower and defensive tenacity makes them a nightmare matchup for any opponent in this tournament.
