Texas Rangers ace Jacob deGrom continues to etch his name into baseball history, reaching a milestone that puts him in rarefied air alongside Hall of Famer Randy Johnson. In Sunday's game against the Chicago Cubs, deGrom notched his 1,900th career strikeout, becoming the second-fastest pitcher to reach that mark by both games and innings pitched.

The milestone moment came in the first inning at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. After Moisés Ballesteros swung through a blistering 98.1 mph fastball for the second out, deGrom froze Seiya Suzuki with a 91.3 mph slider for a swinging strike three to end the frame. It was vintage deGrom—electric stuff, pinpoint command, and that signature ability to make elite hitters look ordinary.

What makes this achievement even more impressive is the context. deGrom reached 1,900 strikeouts in just 256 appearances, all as a starter—a testament to his dominance when healthy. The only pitcher to do it faster? Randy Johnson, the Big Unit himself, who hit that mark in 252 games back in 1997. Johnson, of course, went on to finish second on the all-time strikeout list with 4,875.

There's another layer here that speaks to deGrom's resilience. Johnson was 33 when he reached 1,900 strikeouts; deGrom turns 38 next month and has battled through a series of injuries over the past five seasons. Yet here he is, still generating swings and misses at an elite level, still climbing the strikeout leaderboards despite the time lost.

After that first inning, deGrom's career innings total sat at 1,578 1/3. For context, Atlanta Braves lefty Chris Sale reached the 1,900-strikeout milestone in 2019 at just 1,560 1/3 innings—the fastest by that measure. But deGrom's place among baseball's strikeout elite is secure, and with every start, he adds another chapter to a career defined by unhittable stuff and quiet excellence.
