Jacob deGrom delivered a masterclass on the mound Sunday afternoon at Globe Life Field, and the Texas Rangers couldn't have asked for a better time to get it.
Facing a Chicago Cubs team that entered the weekend as one of baseball's hottest squads, deGrom threw seven innings of three-hit ball, walking none and striking out 10 en route to a 3-0 shutout victory. The win improved deGrom's record to 3-2 and marked arguably his sharpest outing of the season—a performance that came at a crucial juncture for the Rangers.
The game remained scoreless through the first three innings, with both deGrom and Cubs starter Jameson Taillon matching zeros. Taillon, who fell to 2-2 with the loss, pitched 5 1/3 solid innings, allowing four hits and one earned run while walking two and striking out four.
The Rangers broke through in the bottom of the fourth. Josh Jung led off the inning and eventually scored on Joc Pederson's third double of the season, giving Texas a 1-0 lead. The inning also featured a pair of on-field challenges from both teams, but the calls were upheld, keeping the score intact.
After deGrom departed, the Rangers' bullpen maintained the pressure. The game remained tight until the bottom of the eighth, when Evan Carter crushed his fifth home run of the season over the right-field wall. Jung, who was on base again, scored ahead of Carter, giving Texas a 3-0 advantage. Jung finished the day 3-for-4, scoring two of the Rangers' three runs.
Jacob Latz earned his fourth save of the season by closing out the ninth inning, sealing a series victory that cooled off the Cubs' recent hot streak. Chicago went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position, unable to capitalize on any opportunities against deGrom and the Rangers' pitching staff.
For a team looking to build momentum, this was the kind of complete performance—dominant starting pitching, timely hitting, and a lockdown bullpen—that can set the tone for the stretch ahead.
