Rangers striker Youssef Chermiti has vowed that the team’s dramatic post-split collapse will fuel a comeback next season, declaring the struggles have put "fire in our belly" for a title charge.
The Gers suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to Hibs at Ibrox on Wednesday night, with Dane Scarlett’s late winner handing Rangers their fourth consecutive defeat—a first for the club since 1983. Already guaranteed a third-place finish in the Premiership following last weekend’s loss to Celtic, Danny Rohl’s side now face the grim prospect of losing all their post-split games if they fall to Falkirk on Saturday.
But for Chermiti, a 21-year-old striker who joined from Everton last summer, the disappointment is a rallying cry. "Yeah, obviously we know we haven’t won for four games in a row," he said. "We’re really sad, but I think that just gives us a fire in our belly for next season. This season was a fail for us, so obviously we need to improve and go again."
Rohl’s arrival mid-season had sparked hope, clawing Rangers back from a 13-point deficit to briefly re-enter the title race. But defeats to Motherwell, Hearts, and Celtic dashed their dreams of a first top-flight crown in five years. Chermiti, who struggled in his early months in Glasgow, is now eager to turn that pain into silverware.
"I want to win the title—that’s what I’m thinking about," he added. "The first few months in Scotland were a bit difficult for me, but I’ve had time to settle down. I feel more confident in the team and the country now. Everyone gave me confidence, and even on the pitch, I feel better. This season has been sad for us. We had a goal, we didn’t get it, but this is football, and we go again next season."
For now, the focus is on ending the campaign on a high note at Falkirk. "Our target now is Falkirk," Chermiti said. "We’re trying to finish the season well and win that game."
