The Texas Rangers returned to Globe Life Field on Friday night hoping to turn the page on a tough road trip, but the Chicago Cubs had other plans. In a lopsided 7-1 defeat, the Rangers' struggles followed them home, leaving fans searching for answers.
From the first pitch, it was clear the Rangers were in for a long night. The offense managed just two hits—their lowest total since June 6th of last season. The lone bright spot came in the fifth inning when Justin Foscue delivered an RBI single, but it wasn't nearly enough to spark a rally against a red-hot Cubs team that seems to be firing on all cylinders.
On the mound, rookie Kumar Rocker battled through 3 2/3 innings, allowing three earned runs on three walks and three strikeouts. After a shaky first inning where he surrendered an RBI single, Rocker settled in and kept the game within reach through three frames. But the fourth inning proved to be his undoing when Seiya Suzuki launched a two-run home run, forcing Rocker to exit early.
"Those 1-2 and 0-2 counts, changing things, speeding things up, trying to make a perfect pitch—little things like that need to get cleaned up," Rocker reflected after the game. "Not letting those innings get away from me when I have the batters just finishing them."
The Cubs broke the game wide open in the seventh inning when reliever Cal Quantrill served up a bases-clearing three-run double to Michael Busch. By then, the damage was done, and the Rangers' offense had no answer.
Manager Skip Schumaker didn't mince words about his team's offensive struggles. "It's tough, we didn't hit a ton of balls hard tonight," he said. "Up and down the lineup, we just couldn't really string anything together. Some quick innings early on as well, so I think some of it may be attributed to some long innings on the defensive side for the first couple, but after that we just couldn't string anything together."
Adding to the frustration, the Rangers dropped to 0-2 in their new red City Connect uniforms since their launch earlier this year. For a team that prides itself on resilience, this loss stings—and with the series continuing, the Rangers will need to find their groove quickly before the Cubs pull further ahead.
