Ranger Suarez didn't let a little history get in his way. Taking the mound against his former team, the Philadelphia Phillies, on Thursday, the left-hander treated it like just another day at the office—and it showed.
Making his return from a hamstring injury, Suarez delivered a masterclass in pitching. Over 5.1 scoreless innings, he fanned eight batters, showcasing the kind of command that makes him a fan favorite. Despite the emotional weight of facing old teammates, Suarez kept his cool. "To be honest with you, it was like a regular game," he said after the outing. "Obviously, I know they were my old teammates, but I wanted just to get it deep into the game. I knew that my (pitch) count was limited, so I wanted to take advantage of that."
The Red Sox were cautious with Suarez, pulling him after 76 pitches since he hadn't pitched since May 3 due to that hamstring issue. But the lefty made every throw count. This scoreless gem marks the fifth time in eight starts this season that Suarez has held opponents off the board—a stat that speaks volumes about his consistency. "It's a good feeling when you're able to command all your pitches and throw them for strikes, and be able to throw it how you want it," he added.
With a 2-2 record and a sharp 2.44 ERA this season, Suarez is proving to be a reliable arm for Boston. But even his strong performance couldn't lift the Red Sox to a win; the team fell 3-1, dropping another series at Fenway Park. For Suarez, though, the focus remains on the mound—and keeping that regular-game mindset.
