In the world of college football, being a student-athlete is a demanding gig. But imagine adding the rigorous life of an Air Force cadet on top of that. That's the reality for Payton Zdroik, the Los Angeles Rams' latest undrafted free agent signing—and his journey to the NFL is anything but ordinary.

Only 12 graduates from the Air Force Academy have ever played a game in the NFL (not counting those who transferred out during college). Zdroik is aiming to become the 13th. For most players, football has been a lifelong obsession. For Zdroik, who started four years at Air Force under coach Troy Calhoun, the Academy has been his entire world. His parents, Daniel and Kelly, are both Air Force graduates and former Falcons athletes—his dad played halfback, his mom was a swimmer. Even his sister Kaitlynn played college volleyball at San Jose State. Football runs deep in this family, and Zdroik chose Air Force over one other FBS offer and four from the FCS ranks, after honing his skills at the Air Force Prep Academy.

That alone makes for a heartwarming story. But Zdroik is more than just a feel-good family tale—he's a compact weapon on the interior defensive line. Described as a "sawed-off" pass rusher, the 6-foot tackle (officially measured at just under 6 feet at his pro day) brings a rare blend of quick hands, low pad level, and relentless motor. In a league where undersized defensive tackles are a rarity—think Rams' own Poona Ford as a standout example—Zdroik's unique body type and technique make him a sleeper worth watching.

For Rams fans, this undrafted gem could be the next diamond in the rough, proving that sometimes the best things come in small, Air Force-tested packages.
