The Rams aren’t afraid of a midseason kicker carousel

The Los Angeles Rams have a history of treating their kicking game like a revolving door, and it looks like they're about to do it all over again with Harrison Mevis. After cutting ties with sixth-round pick Joshua Karty midseason, the Rams turned to Mevis — a solid kicker, no doubt, but one who might not be the long-term answer the team desperately needs.

When you're forced to fire your kicker in November, the bar is low. But going into 2026 with Mevis as the only option on the roster suggests Sean McVay still hasn't learned his lesson. The Rams have consistently undervalued special teams, and this move feels like another chapter in that same old story — even after a heartbreaking NFC Championship loss that exposed those very weaknesses.

Let's be clear: Mevis isn't the root of L.A.'s special teams problems. In fact, he was one of the few bright spots. Over 12 games (including playoffs), he missed just one kick out of 65 attempts — impressive stats that might make you think the Rams are in good hands. But numbers don't tell the whole story.

The issue isn't Mevis's performance; it's the mentality behind the roster decision. The Rams seem content with "good enough" at kicker, rather than seeking out a player who can consistently deliver in high-pressure moments. That approach has burned them before, and it could burn them again.

Even the football universe seems to be sending signals. During a playoff game, NBC's audio picked up something strange around Mevis — almost like the stars themselves were trying to warn us that something's off. And while his leg might be reliable, it's not exceptional. Period.

For a team with Super Bowl aspirations, settling for average at any position — especially one that can decide games in the final seconds — is a gamble the Rams can't afford to keep taking.
