Giants home game cited as L.A.’s best case after Australia trip

The Los Angeles Rams face an unusual challenge to start the 2026 NFL season: a Week 1 trip to Melbourne, Australia, to take on the San Francisco 49ers. While traveling halfway around the world for a game is far from ideal for head coach Sean McVay, there's a silver lining that has analysts calling the Rams' subsequent matchup the "best-case scenario."

According to reports, the Rams are set to host the New York Giants on Monday Night Football in Week 2. CBS Sports' John Breech has dubbed this the "best-case scenario" for Los Angeles, and for good reason. The extra day of rest from playing on Monday instead of Sunday gives the Rams a slight recovery edge after their grueling trip. Plus, they'll be playing at home against a Giants team that must fly across the country—a travel disadvantage of their own.

The Giants, who have lost at least 10 games in 10 of the last 12 seasons, are coming off another tough year. While they've brought in a new head coach in the highly-respected John Harbaugh, it's fair to question how much progress can be made in just one week of preparation. Quarterback Jaxson Dart showed promise as a rookie in 2025, but he still has plenty to prove as a long-term NFL starter. Adding to the Giants' offensive woes, star wide receiver Malik Nabers is unlikely to return from a torn ACL in time for the season opener.

Defensively, the Giants struggled mightily last season, ranking dead last in yards per carry allowed against the run. That's great news for Rams running back Kyren Williams and McVay's 13-personnel heavy offense, which thrives on establishing the ground game. It could be an ideal setup for Los Angeles to get back on track after their overseas adventure.

Facing the 49ers in Australia wasn't what McVay wanted, but given the circumstances, a Monday night home game against a rebuilding Giants team is the NFL's way of saying, "We're sorry." For Rams fans, this is about as good as it gets.
