Los Angeles Rams defensive star Byron Young weighs in on the team's controversial Ty Simpson selection in the first round of the draft.

When the Los Angeles Rams made Ty Simpson the 13th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, the reaction was immediate—and far from universally positive. But one key voice in the locker room is already rallying behind the young quarterback.

Rams star defensive end Byron Young recently sat down with R.org's DJ Siddiqi to share his thoughts on the controversial selection, and his message was one of trust and optimism.

"I think he's a good quarterback, he's a great kid," Young said. "With the front office, trusting everything that they do is in the best interest of this team. I'm looking forward to seeing where this goes. We got some great players, got some D-linemen, got some tight ends. Got some receivers in there. I can't wait to see what these guys bring to this. I have no doubt that these guys will come in, definitely help motivate you regardless of what pick they are."

The pick came with plenty of backlash, especially after head coach Sean McVay's body language during the Day 1 draft press conference raised eyebrows. Since then, the Rams have gone into full damage control mode, backing Simpson like no other prospect.

From a roster perspective, the decision raised questions. The Rams had clear needs at wide receiver and along the offensive line. But instead of addressing those immediate gaps, they opted to swing for the fences on a player they believe could be the long-term answer under center after Matthew Stafford.

Whether Simpson will be that franchise quarterback remains to be seen. What's certain, however, is that he won't be leading Los Angeles to a Lombardi Trophy in 2026. For now, Young and the Rams are choosing to focus on the future—and the belief that this controversial pick will eventually pay off.
