The Los Angeles Rams have decided not to pick up the fifth-year option on cornerback Emmanuel Forbes' contract, as confirmed by the NFL's personnel notice. This move, while not entirely surprising, signals a pivotal moment for the 25-year-old defensive back who joined the Rams under unique circumstances.

Forbes, originally selected 16th overall by the Washington Commanders in the 2023 NFL Draft, saw his tenure in the nation's capital cut short. The Commanders waived him in December 2024, and the Rams quickly claimed him off waivers, hoping to unlock the potential that made him a first-round pick. However, the decision to decline the option—which would have fully guaranteed Forbes a hefty $12.6 million in 2027—suggests the Rams are taking a cautious approach with their investment.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, Forbes put together a solid 2025 campaign. He started 14 games and appeared in all 17, logging 814 defensive snaps and 82 more on special teams. His stat line included 45 tackles, three interceptions, 18 passes defensed, and a forced fumble—numbers that show he can make plays when given the opportunity.

Yet, there were signs of concern down the stretch. Forbes did not start the Rams' final two postseason games, playing just 29 total defensive snaps against the Bears and Seahawks. This reduced role in high-stakes moments likely factored into the team's decision.

Forbes now joins a select group of five first-round picks from the 2023 draft class whose fifth-year options have been declined. For the Rams, this move keeps their options open as they evaluate their secondary depth. For Forbes, it's a reminder that in the NFL, every snap counts—and the path to a long-term deal often runs through consistent performance when the lights are brightest.
