This is a massive difference in projections for first-round QBs.

The Los Angeles Rams made a bold move in the 2026 NFL Draft, selecting quarterback Ty Simpson with the 13th overall pick. The message was clear: this is the future after Matthew Stafford. But for the upcoming season, Stafford remains the man under center, meaning Simpson will likely spend most—if not all—of his rookie year learning from the sideline.

So, what could Simpson actually produce if he sees the field? According to ESPN's Mike Clay, the rookie's stat line would be modest at best: 146 passing yards, one touchdown, and one interception, plus five rushing yards. That projection paints a picture of limited action—perhaps a Week 18 start while the Rams rest Stafford for the playoffs, or a few snaps in mop-up duty.

Compare that to fellow first-round quarterback Fernando Mendoza, taken by the Las Vegas Raiders, and the gap is staggering. Clay projects Mendoza to throw for 3,066 yards, 15 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions, while adding 229 rushing yards and two scores on the ground. That's exactly 21 times more passing yards than Simpson, along with a 224-yard rushing advantage and a 16-touchdown difference.

It's a brutal side-by-side comparison, even if the context explains the disparity. Mendoza is expected to take over early in the season for Kirk Cousins and hold onto the starting job, while Simpson's projection reflects a backup role with only a handful of opportunities. Both players were first-round picks, but their rookie paths couldn't be more different.

For Rams fans, the takeaway isn't panic—it's patience. Simpson's time will come. For now, the future sits and waits, while the present belongs to Stafford.
