In a thrilling display of speed and power, José Ramírez stole his 300th career base, becoming just the second player in Cleveland Guardians franchise history to reach that milestone, joining the legendary Kenny Lofton. Ramírez also joined an elite group of active players—Starling Marte, Jose Altuve, and Trea Turner—who have achieved this mark. His milestone came during a four-run fifth inning that sparked the Guardians' 14-6 comeback victory over the Athletics on Saturday.
The game was a rollercoaster from the start. Shea Langeliers launched two home runs for the Athletics, a two-run shot in the first and a solo blast in the fifth, giving Oakland an early lead. But the Guardians refused to back down. In the fifth, Ramírez delivered a clutch two-run double to put Cleveland ahead 4-3, then swiped third base to cement his historic moment. Rhys Hopkins followed with a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 5-3.
The momentum didn't stop there. David Fry crushed his second homer of the season in the sixth, and rookie Travis Bazzana notched his first major league hit and RBI with a two-run single in the seventh, immediately stealing his first base. Kyle Manzardo added insurance in the eighth with a three-run homer, while Brayan Rocchio and Steven Kwan drove in runs in the ninth to seal the win. Austin Hedges also contributed with his first homer of the season in the third.
Slade Cecconi (1-4) earned the win despite allowing five runs and 10 hits over 5 1/3 innings, while Jacob Lopez (2-2) took the loss for Oakland, giving up six runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings. The 14-run outburst marked Cleveland's highest-scoring game since June 28, 2023, when they also scored 14 runs against Kansas City.
Notably, Athletics rookie Nick Kurtz went 2 for 5 but saw his remarkable streak of consecutive games with a walk end at 20, tied for the second-longest in MLB history. The series finale on Sunday features Guardians left-hander Parker Messick (3-0, 1.73 ERA) against Athletics right-hander Aaron Civale (2-1, 3.23 ERA).
