Ralf Schumacher named the one driver on the grid who has a seat because of the financial backing he brings to the team. In Formula 1, earning a spot on a team takes more than just skill behind the wheel.

In a recent episode of Backstage Boxengasse, former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher stirred up the paddock by naming the one driver he believes still holds a seat in Formula 1 primarily due to financial backing rather than pure racing talent.

Let's face it: making it to the F1 grid isn't just about being the fastest behind the wheel. The sport's massive financial demands mean drivers often need to bring more than skill—they need to be marketable and profitable, too. Sponsorship money keeps most teams running, and a driver who can attract sponsors adds real value beyond their on-track performance.

Schumacher points to Alpine and the patience Flavio Briatore has shown with Franco Colapinto as a prime example. "I truly believe Flavio Briatore partly believes in Franco Colapinto and attributes a certain talent to him. There's no question about that," Schumacher said. "But I think he has a few million reasons to do so."

According to Schumacher, Colapinto brings crucial sponsorship dollars to Alpine—money that's desperately needed as the team works to rebuild. "Gasly is someone he can rely on. Colapinto is someone who can be faster at times and slower. But he brings money that he urgently needs to get the team back on track," Schumacher explained. "Renault and the investors want to contribute as little as possible, and every dollar is important."

This isn't to diminish Colapinto's achievements, Schumacher stressed, but it's part of the reality behind why Briatore agreed to back him. And if Colapinto adjusts his performance and proves his worth on the track, all the better for him.

Interestingly, Briatore initially pushed for Colapinto to leave Alpine before he re-signed with the team. Now, the veteran team boss is expected to throw his full support behind the Argentine driver, speaking highly of his potential.

For fans and aspiring racers, this serves as a reminder that in Formula 1, talent alone isn't always enough—sometimes, it takes a strong financial partnership to keep the dream alive.
