The Las Vegas Raiders landed their franchise quarterback in Fernando Mendoza with the No. 1 overall pick of the 2026 NFL Draft. But if they want their young signal-caller to succeed, there's one glaring hole they still need to fill: a true No. 1 wide receiver.
Yes, Mendoza has star tight end Brock Bowers to lean on, and dynamic running back Ashton Jeanty will take pressure off the passing game. But as ESPN's Aaron Schatz recently highlighted, the Raiders' wide receiver room is thin on proven talent. Tre Tucker managed 57 catches for 696 yards and five touchdowns last season, but graded poorly in ESPN's receiver scores. Jack Bech and Dont'e Thornton Jr. underwhelmed as rookies, while Dareke Young has just four career receptions. Sixth-round pick Malik Benson is a developmental project.
The Raiders brought in veteran Kirk Cousins to serve as a bridge starter, meaning Mendoza may not even see the field in Week 1. But whether he's learning on the sideline or taking snaps under center, he'll need reliable targets on the outside. Quality veteran receivers are still available on the market, and if Vegas doesn't act soon, next year's draft should be loaded with early-round receiver prospects.
For now, the message is clear: Mendoza has the arm talent to lead this offense, but he can't do it alone. The Raiders need to give him weapons—and fast.
