The boxing world was dealt a disappointing blow on Friday as Ra'eese Aleem failed to make weight for his scheduled IBF featherweight title fight against champion Angelo Leo, forcing the cancellation of their highly anticipated showdown.
Aleem stepped on the scale at a staggering 128.8 pounds—nearly three pounds over the 126-pound featherweight limit. After a brief reprieve, he returned for a second attempt, managing to shed only 0.8 pounds to hit 128 pounds. Still well over the mark, the bout was officially scrapped.
According to ESPN.com's Andreas Hale, Leo will still receive his full purse of $147,000, in accordance with Georgia State Athletic Commission rules. The event, set to take place in College Park, will proceed as scheduled, but has lost its marquee attraction.
Stepping into the spotlight is 27-year-old prospect Atif Oberlton (15-0, 13 KOs), who now headlines the card in a 10-round light heavyweight clash against veteran Carlos Gongora (22-3, 17 KOs). For fight fans, this is a solid consolation prize—Oberlton has been on a tear, and Gongora brings the kind of experience that could make for an explosive main event.
The undercard remains intact, with heavyweight prospect Pryce Taylor and super bantamweight Ashleyann Lozada still set to compete. But for Leo, this is a frustrating setback. The champion hasn't fought since a successful title defense against Tomoki Kameda in Japan back in May 2025, and this cancellation delays his return to the ring even further.
For Aleem, the situation is even more concerning. Having already moved up from 122 pounds in late 2024, this weight miss could force him to consider a jump to 130 pounds—a division where he'd essentially have to start over in his quest to climb the rankings. In a sport where timing is everything, both fighters leave Georgia with more questions than answers.
