Shane van Gisbergen has done it again. The New Zealander, who burst onto the NASCAR scene and instantly mastered road courses, captured his first Cup victory of the 2026 season at Watkins Glen—his seventh road course win in the series. That ties Chase Elliott for the most among active drivers. Chevrolet dominated much of the afternoon, claiming five of the top eight spots.

Michael McDowell finished second, while Connor Zilisch looked poised to challenge SVG before a right-front tire ended that bid. But the most jaw-dropping part of the day was how van Gisbergen won.

The 37-year-old pitted from the lead with 25 laps remaining, rejoining in 26th place, a staggering 30 seconds behind. What followed was a masterclass in tire management and sheer determination. He carved through the field on fresh rubber, reclaiming the lead with just seven laps to go. By the time the checkered flag waved, he had won by 7.288 seconds—and was already doing his victory burnout before half the field had even finished.

“Yeah, pretty unreal and just thankful for my No. 97 Superfile Chevrolet team,” SVG said. “Just an unbelievable day. The strategies worked out perfectly, and the car was magic. To back it up from last year is pretty unreal. I love chasing everyone down on a tire difference. Josh, my spotter, was excellent giving me lap times and gaps. I was trying to calculate it as I went and manage the tires so I’d still have something when I got there. It’s just so special.”

For McDowell, who has endured a rough stretch, second place felt like a lifeline. “Second is awesome. It’s great to get momentum,” he said. “God is so good.”

In a sport where every weekend writes a new story, van Gisbergen continues to author chapters that defy belief. For fans and drivers alike, this was more than a win—it was a reminder that some talents are simply extraordinary.
