Big news out of the Big Ten: R.J. Day, the son of Ohio State head coach Ryan Day, has committed to Northwestern—a conference rival of his father's team. The three-star quarterback from St. Francis DeSales in Columbus, Ohio, announced his decision on social media, choosing the Wildcats over offers from Purdue, Cincinnati, Syracuse, and Boston College for the 2027 recruiting class.
Standing 6-foot-1 and weighing 205 pounds, Day is a proven leader under center. He's been the starting quarterback at DeSales for three seasons, entering his senior year as the school's all-time leader in career passing yards (5,714) and touchdowns (54). Last season alone, he set single-season records with 2,710 yards and 25 touchdowns.
While it might seem unusual for the son of a Buckeye legend to join a Big Ten rival, the connection becomes clear when you look at the coaching staff. Northwestern offensive coordinator Chip Kelly—who served as Ohio State's OC under Ryan Day in 2024—will now coach R.J. Kelly also coached Ryan Day at New Hampshire from 1999 to 2006, where Day set school records for career passing touchdowns (53), completion percentage (59.9%), and total offense (8,492 yards).
Day also drew interest from South Florida (now coached by former Buckeyes OC Brian Hartline) and took visits to Clemson, Iowa State, Kentucky, UCLA, and Virginia Tech. But in the end, the combination of academic excellence and a familiar offensive system made Northwestern the perfect fit.
