Plenty of questions will remain for Tennessee after Saturday's spring game as coach Josh Heupel enters a critical season

When the Tennessee Volunteers take the field for their annual Orange and White spring game this Saturday, all eyes will be on the foundational battles that will define their 2026 season. For head coach Josh Heupel, this scrimmage offers the first public glimpse into a team facing critical questions on both sides of the ball, setting the stage for what promises to be a pivotal year in Knoxville.

With the game not slated for television broadcast, the most telling insights will come from those in the stands at Neyland Stadium. Yet, for fans everywhere, every social media clip and practice report will be dissected for clues, especially regarding the most pressing issue: the wide-open quarterback competition.

The battle under center is a compelling story of potential versus pedigree. Redshirt freshman George MacIntyre, a former four-star recruit, brings a year of familiarity with Heupel's high-octane offensive system and an impressive 6-foot-6 frame. He’s bulked up to 201 pounds and possesses the arm talent to lead the attack, though ball security remains a key area to watch. Challenging him is true freshman Faizon Brandon, whose raw talent and early enrollment have made this a truly heated contest. Coach Heupel has been tight-lipped, making the distribution of first-team reps during the spring game a major point of focus.

Equally significant is the debut of a revamped defense under new coordinator Jim Knowles. After a disappointing 2025 season led to a staff overhaul, Knowles arrives with a proven track record and has quickly infused the unit with impact transfers, particularly from Penn State. Saturday's scrimmage will be our first look at how these new pieces are gelling and what schematic changes Knowles is implementing to shore up the Vols' defense.

While a spring game won't provide all the answers, it’s a crucial checkpoint. For a program and a fanbase hungry to return to the SEC's upper echelon, the performances in this glorified scrimmage will set the tone for the summer and build anticipation for a fall where the Vols aim to make a major statement.
