The Arizona Cardinals used their third-round pick to select quarterback Carson Beck last week. He gets added to a quarterback room that includes incumbent starter Jacoby Brissett and free agent addition Gardner Minshew.

As a third-round pick, Beck probably is not expected to compete for a starting job, although the question did come up, to which general manager Monti Ossenfort responded, "I think we just announced his name about a half hour ago, so, we just want to get him in the building here and show him where the cafeteria is and the locker room is and get him fitted for his gear and then we'll go from there.

"We're excited to add great competition in that room and we'll see how it shakes out."

Ossenfort and head coach Mike LaFleur have both said previously that starting jobs have not been established yet and that will happen later.

Brissett, the presumed starter after he started the final 12 games of last season and set career highs in passing yards and touchdown passes, has chosen to stay away from voluntary offseason workouts in pursuit of a revised contract. He wants a multi-year deal that pays him like a starting quarterback.

That obviously opens the door to Beck for more offseason reps while Brissett "holds out."

However, the Cardinals are downplaying the situation with Brissett at this point.

“We have had good dialogue," Ossenfort said last week after the first round of the draft. "Both Mike and I have had good dialogue with Jacoby. Obviously, this is the voluntary portion of everything. We'll continue to have conversations with Jacoby, but things are in a good spot.”

Beck started 43 college games for big-time programs at Georgia and Miami, and he led the Hurricanes to the national championship game. He showed his ability to learn a new offensive system and succeed in his transfer to Miami, something that will benefit him as he transitions to the NFL.

Brissett's absence opens the door to both Minshew and Beck to unseat him as the expected starter.
