The Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL) has taken decisive action following a controversial play in the opening game of the Walter Cup semifinals. Boston Fleet defender Rylind MacKinnon has been suspended for one game—meaning she'll miss Game Two of the series—after the league's Player Safety Committee reviewed an illegal hit to the head incident.
The sequence unfolded late in the first period of Boston's hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Ottawa Charge. MacKinnon delivered a high-impact body check to Ottawa forward Gabbie Hughes, drawing a five-minute major penalty after an extended officials' review. The league's statement made clear that the committee found MacKinnon made "no attempt to play the puck" and delivered a "high, forceful, and illegal body check" where Hughes' head was the primary point of contact—and that such contact was avoidable.
This suspension marks a troubling trend for the second-year blueliner. It's the third time MacKinnon has faced supplemental discipline from the league, and the second instance this season alone. She was previously fined $500 on March 27 for a separate incident, and also served a one-game suspension last season for another illegal check to the head.
For Boston, losing MacKinnon's physical presence on the blue line is a significant blow as they aim to take a commanding series lead. The Fleet will need to tighten their defensive structure and avoid any further disciplinary issues if they hope to advance past a determined Ottawa squad. Game Two promises to be an intense battle, with both teams fully aware of the stakes.
