The Ottawa Charge will have to wait just a little longer to learn their opponent in the PWHL Walter Cup Finals. The highly anticipated decisive Game 5 between the defending champion Minnesota Frost and the Montréal Victoire has been postponed due to player safety concerns related to illness.
The PWHL made the announcement just two hours before the scheduled puck drop at Place Bell in Quebec, Canada, on May 11. Medical personnel determined that while the symptoms aren't consistent with hantavirus, the decision was made to prioritize the health and wellbeing of players, fans, and staff. "The decision was made following consultation with medical personnel and in accordance with the league’s commitment to the health and wellbeing of players, fans, staff and all those involved in the competition," the league stated.
This isn't the first time some players have faced a postponement due to illness. Notably, Canadian and Montréal forward Marie-Philip Poulin experienced a similar situation earlier this year when a preliminary matchup between Finland and Canada at the 2026 Winter Olympics was delayed following a norovirus outbreak among the Finnish team.
Game 5 will be rescheduled as soon as medical guidance determines it's appropriate to resume play. Meanwhile, the Ottawa Charge have already punched their ticket to the Walter Cup Finals for the second consecutive year, thanks to a thrilling double-overtime winner from Michela Cava that defeated the Boston Fleet 4-3 and secured a 3-1 series victory on May 10.
It's been a season full of twists and turns. Montréal finished atop the regular-season standings and chose to face the Frost in the first round, having defeated Minnesota four times during the regular season. But the defending champions have proven resilient, forcing a decisive Game 5 after falling behind in the series.
As the hockey world waits for the next chapter, one thing is certain: the winner will face a well-rested Ottawa Charge squad eager to claim the Walter Cup. Whether you're gearing up for the finals or just love the game, now is the perfect time to refresh your hockey wardrobe with gear that celebrates the passion and unpredictability of women's hockey.
