The Las Vegas team will be officially unveiled at a press conference later Wednesday at the Vegas Golden Knights' home arena, with Hamilton's introduction following on Thursday. This double-shot of expansion follows last week's addition of Detroit, signaling a rapid and strategic push to broaden the league's footprint.
"There's a lot of excitement and adrenaline and a lot of 'Let's go,'" said Amy Scheer, the league's executive vice president of business operations. "We're stoked and we're proud of how far we've come in a short time. But the work starts now. It's wonderful to make announcements, but that's really when the real work comes, and the proof is in the pudding."
Las Vegas represents a bold move into the American Southwest, a fresh frontier for the PWHL after it expanded into the Pacific Northwest last year with teams in Seattle and Vancouver. "We do need to geographically expand past the northeast and the north in general," Scheer explained. "So that's part of the plan as we start to branch out: What are the right markets that make sense to become a little bit more geographically diverse?"
With San Jose, California, and Denver also in the running for future expansion, the league is positioning itself to potentially split into either two six-team conferences or three four-team divisions based on regional proximity. This would create a more balanced and travel-friendly schedule for players and fans alike.
Hamilton, meanwhile, becomes Ontario's third franchise, further strengthening the PWHL's presence in the province's densely populated "Golden Horseshoe" region. Located just 42 miles east of Toronto, the team is expected to tap into a passionate hockey fanbase without pulling attention away from the existing Toronto franchise. The original six teams—New York, Boston, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, and Minnesota—have already built a strong foundation, and this expansion promises to energize the league even further.
