It’s hard to believe, but exactly one year ago today, the Colorado Rockies made a major change in the dugout. On this date in 2025, the club parted ways with longtime manager Bud Black and promoted third-base coach Warren Schaeffer to interim manager. By November 24, 2025, the interim tag was removed, and Schaeffer was officially named the permanent skipper.
Rockies president of baseball operations Paul DePodesta didn’t rush the decision lightly. “I certainly explored the idea of exploring other managerial candidates,” he said at Schaeffer’s introductory press conference. “I thought it was important to do that and talk to a lot of people about different potential candidates. But ultimately, this is where I landed. And it was pretty quick. Even a week in, after speaking with so many people inside and outside the organization about ‘Schaeff,’ it became clear this was the right direction.”
So, how has that decision played out? The 2025 season was a brutal one for the Rockies, finishing with a historically poor 43-119 record—the worst in franchise history. While the 2026 campaign has shown some signs of improvement, many of the underlying issues that plagued the team remain.
For Rockies fans, it’s a mixed bag. Schaeffer inherited a team in transition, and while the record hasn’t been kind, his leadership and player development focus have drawn praise. But in a division as tough as the NL West, results matter.
