The Purdue Boilermakers are heating up the diamond this season, but their path to the NCAA Tournament is looking like a tough at-bat with two strikes. Currently sitting at 32-15 overall and 15-9 in Big Ten play, Purdue is holding steady at sixth in the conference standings as of May 5. With just a handful of games left—three each against Indiana and Iowa, plus a single matchup with Ball State—every pitch counts.

College baseball bracketologists are projecting five Big Ten teams to snag spots in the 64-team field, which culminates in the College World Series starting June 12 in Omaha, Nebraska. Unfortunately, the Boilermakers are on the outside looking in, listed among the "next four out." That's a tough spot, especially with a strength of schedule ranked No. 104 and an RPI of No. 52, leaving little room for error or upward momentum.

The competition is fierce across the board, with the SEC leading the pack with a projected 12 bids. Other power conferences like the ACC (9), Big 12 (7), and Big Ten (5) are also stacking the deck, while mid-majors like Conference USA (3), American (2), Big West (2), and Sun Belt (2) are fighting for their share of the spotlight.

For Purdue, the upcoming series against Indiana and Iowa will be critical. A strong finish could flip the script, but with such a narrow margin for improvement, it's going to take a clutch performance to secure that regional berth. Fans should keep their eyes on the standings and rally behind the Boilermakers as they look to swing their way into the tournament conversation.
