In a dramatic turn of events during Thursday's IPL clash in Dharamshala, veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has called for an urgent rule change after Punjab Kings were denied a crucial run despite successfully overturning an umpire's decision through the Decision Review System (DRS).
The incident occurred on the final ball of Punjab's innings against Mumbai Indians. Jasprit Bumrah delivered a low full toss that angled into the off side, striking batter Vishnu Vinod on the pad. The on-field umpire immediately raised his finger, signaling out.
Punjab opted for a review, and ball-tracking technology confirmed that the impact was outside off stump, leading to the dismissal being overturned. However, under current IPL regulations, when a batter is given out and the ball doesn't make contact with the bat, no leg bye can be awarded—even if the review successfully reverses the original decision.
This meant Punjab lost a run they rightfully should have gained, despite using one of their reviews to correct an incorrect call. The controversy sparked immediate reaction from Ashwin, who took to X (formerly Twitter) to voice his frustration.
"The wrong decision has cost Punjab a run, this rule needs to change ASAP!" Ashwin wrote. "Just like how the 'IMPACT SUB' is an IPL rule, the DRS reversal should also be brought into the IPL even if the ICC delays it for some reason. #MIVPBKS #IPL."
Despite the setback, Punjab Kings managed to post a competitive total of 200 for 8, with Prabhsimran Singh leading the charge with a blistering 57 off just 32 balls. However, the incident has reignited discussions about the need for cricket's governing bodies to address the gap in DRS protocols, particularly in high-stakes T20 tournaments where every run counts.
As the debate continues, fans and players alike will be watching closely to see whether the BCCI takes Ashwin's advice and introduces a DRS reversal rule sooner rather than later—potentially setting a precedent that could change how the game is played in the IPL and beyond.
