Puerto Rican basketball has lost one of its greatest icons. José "Piculin" Ortiz, a FIBA Hall of Famer and a towering figure in the sport, passed away at the age of 62 after a courageous battle with colorectal cancer, which he had been fighting since 2023.

Ortiz's journey to basketball stardom began at Oregon State University, where he dominated the court for the Beavers. Averaging an impressive 19.8 points and 8.7 rebounds per game, his standout performance earned him the Pac-10 Player of the Year honor in 1987. That same year, he made history by becoming the first Puerto Rican player ever selected in the first round of the NBA Draft, picked 15th overall by the Utah Jazz. Though his NBA tenure spanned just two seasons—averaging 2.9 points and 1.1 rebounds over 64 games—his impact extended far beyond the league.

After his time in the NBA, Ortiz took his talents overseas, playing professionally in Spain and Greece before returning to his homeland to continue his career in Puerto Rico. But it was on the international stage where he truly shined. A pillar of the Puerto Rican National Team, Ortiz represented his country in four Olympic Games (1988, 1992, 1996, and 2004) and competed in numerous FIBA World Championships and international tournaments. His dedication and skill made him a beloved figure across the basketball world.

In 2019, Ortiz's two-decade-long career was immortalized with his induction into the FIBA Basketball Hall of Fame—a fitting tribute to a player who inspired generations. "Today Puerto Rico loses more than an athlete, it loses a legend," the Puerto Rico Basketball Federation shared. "Thank you for all the joys, for representing our flag with pride, and for taking the name of our island to the highest. Rest in peace, José 'Piculin' Ortiz Rijos. Your legacy will live on every court, with every fan, and with every generation that you inspire."

As we remember his incredible journey, Ortiz's story reminds us that true greatness isn't just measured in stats—it's in the pride and passion you bring to the game. For fans and players alike, his legacy will forever be a part of basketball's rich history.
