Paris Saint-Germain boss Luis Enrique faces a delicate balancing act this weekend as he decides how many key players to rest for Saturday's Ligue 1 clash against mid-table Lorient—all with one eye on a massive Champions League semifinal return leg against Bayern Munich.
The French champions are still not mathematically assured of the Ligue 1 title, holding a six-point lead over second-placed Lens with just four games remaining. But Wednesday's second leg against Bayern looms large after a breathtaking 5-4 first-leg victory for PSG on Tuesday, a match that left both sides physically and emotionally drained.
"Every match is different and presents its own challenges. We have to take everything into consideration," Luis Enrique said Friday. "I need to speak to the players individually. It's not easy, it's like playing Tetris. We have to win the three points and manage to get the players back for the most important match of the season."
The high-octane showdown with Bayern came at a cost. Star right back Achraf Hakimi suffered a thigh injury that will sideline him for several weeks, leaving a significant gap in PSG's defense.
"Bayern is the hardest opponent I've faced with PSG. It was the most physically intense game of the season, and emotionally there was also more fatigue," Luis Enrique added. "Hakimi is a machine who always plays at an incredible level, it's like having three players. Unfortunately he won't be in Munich but we are serene."
With Hakimi out, Warren Zaïre-Emery is expected to shift from midfield to fill in at right back—a move that carries its own risks given the youngster's importance. Luis Enrique can ill afford another injury in that position, especially with goalkeeper Matvei Safonov also needing to be protected ahead of the Bayern clash, as backup Lucas Chevalier is already sidelined.
In goal, Luis Enrique may hand a first Ligue 1 start to 19-year-old Renato Marin, the highly-rated shot-stopper who joined from Roma last summer. Meanwhile, Spain midfielder Fabián Ruiz could feature against Lorient after recently returning from a knee injury sustained against Sporting Lisbon back in January.
"Fabian is an incredible player for us, one of the best," Luis Enrique said. "We need to manage his minutes carefully, but he gives us so much quality in midfield."
With a tricky trip to second-placed Lens still to come on May 13, every point matters in the title race. But for PSG, the bigger prize—a place in the Champions League final—may well dictate how many stars take the field at the Parc des Princes on Saturday.
