When the Seattle Kraken selected Clarke Caswell in the fifth round of the 2024 NHL Entry Draft (151st overall), they knew they were getting a player with serious potential. But even the most optimistic projections couldn't have predicted just how quickly he'd make his mark on the college hockey landscape.
This season, Caswell made the jump from the WHL's Swift Current Broncos to the University of Denver Pioneers—a move made possible by the recent NCAA rule change allowing WHL alumni to compete. And what a transition it's been.
After lighting up the WHL with 22 goals and 62 assists (84 points in 65 games) in his final junior season, Caswell seamlessly adapted to the faster, more structured NCAA game. In 43 games with Denver, he posted 8 goals and 26 assists while finishing with an impressive +11 rating. His performance didn't go unnoticed—he was named Rookie of the Month for both his conference and nationally during March and April.
But Caswell saved his biggest moment for the biggest stage. During the Frozen Four Championship, with Denver's season on the line, he scored the game-tying goal in the third period to force overtime. The Pioneers would go on to win that semifinal thriller and ultimately capture the national title against Wisconsin.
For a fifth-round pick to end his rookie NCAA season with a championship ring and national rookie honors? That's the kind of development story that gets scouts excited. Expect to see Caswell back in Denver for the 2026-27 season, continuing to build on what's already been a remarkable start to his college career.
