Planning your trip to the Indianapolis 500? We've got you covered with everything you need to know about getting in, getting out, and navigating the road closures around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Whether you're a first-timer or a seasoned fan, a little preparation goes a long way on race day.
Getting to the Track: Gates and Timing
All entrance gates to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway will be open on race day. To beat the crowds and ensure a smooth entry, we recommend arriving at the gate closest to your seating location by 10 a.m. ET. This gives you plenty of time to find your seats, grab some gear from the merchandise stands, and soak in the pre-race atmosphere before the green flag drops.
Parking & Camping: Sold Out
If you haven't secured a parking pass yet, you're out of luck—all Indianapolis 500 race day parking is sold out, and race day camping is also fully booked. Consider ride-sharing, carpooling with friends, or using public transportation to avoid last-minute headaches.
Road Closures: What to Expect
Road closures will kick in around noon ET between 16th Street and Olin Avenue. Polco Street will be closed to northbound traffic from 10th Street during this time. Additionally, Georgetown Road south to 25th Street will close to all vehicles starting at 5 a.m. If you need to access parking lots along Georgetown Road after 5 a.m., here's the game plan: southbound traffic should take 25th Street to Auburn Street, while northbound traffic should use Crawfordsville Road to Winton Avenue. Plan your route accordingly to avoid getting stuck.
Exiting After the Race: Patience is Key
Once the checkered flag waves, public safety officials will direct vehicular traffic out of IMS parking lots to ensure the quickest possible exit. However, don't expect a speedy getaway—vehicles can be held in lots for up to two hours following the race. Pack snacks, water, and a bit of patience, and consider staying put for a while to let the initial rush clear.
Pro Tip: For a printable map with detailed driving directions and closure zones, look for the arrow in the top right corner of the map image, then use the file menu on the new tab to print. Keep it in your car or on your phone for quick reference throughout the day.
