Mother's Day is a time to celebrate the women who go above and beyond for their families, and in the world of high school sports, few stories shine brighter than those of single moms who become their children's biggest champions. Two local athletes—Sylmar pitcher Matthew Torres and Carson quarterback Chris Fields—recently opened up about the incredible sacrifices their mothers have made, proving that the most valuable player in their lives isn't on the field.

For Matthew Torres, a 6-foot-3, 185-pound senior, life changed when his parents separated when he was 12. His father has been absent from his high school games, but his mother, Roxanne, stepped up in a big way. Raising four boys and one daughter, she mastered the art of multitasking and embraced the chaos of sports. More importantly, she guided Matthew through tough times by keeping him grounded in his faith.

"Her bringing me to church and getting to know God has made me the man I am today," Torres said.

That support has paid off on the diamond. Torres became the No. 1 pitcher in the Valley Mission League this season, posting a perfect 8-0 record while batting .488. He led Sylmar to a league title and the No. 1 seed in the City Section Division I playoffs. This Sunday, he has a secret surprise planned to honor his mom—because every MVP knows when to give credit where it's due.

Across town at Carson High, All-City quarterback Chris Fields has a similar story of resilience. His mother, Shere Fletcher, dived headfirst into learning football so she could be at her son's side every step of the way. The family faced tough times, with Fields describing their situation as "impoverished." His mom worked multiple jobs while studying, sacrificing everything to give her children a brighter future. She eventually became a paralegal, but her true calling might be on the sidelines—she never misses a practice or game.

"I've been through everything with my mom," Fields said.

This Mother's Day, Fields is paying tribute in style: a vintage Jerry Rice jersey for his mom (who's a die-hard 49ers fan) and a trip to Santa Anita. It's a fitting gift for a woman who has earned the title "Coach Fletcher," even if she prefers just "mom."

These stories remind us that behind every great athlete is often a parent who has spent countless hours driving, feeding, and motivating through every high and low. Whether it's a surprise breakfast in bed or a game-day jersey, the love between a mother and her child is the ultimate championship bond.
