Freshman Mattias Di Maggio of Dos Puebos has emerged as top baseball player this season

When you hear the name Di Maggio, baseball greatness immediately comes to mind. And at Dos Pueblos High in Goleta, freshman Mattias Di Maggio is already proving that this legendary surname carries serious weight on the diamond.

Head coach George Hedricks didn't hesitate to start the young phenom, and for good reason. It turns out Mattias isn't just carrying a famous name—he's a distant relative of the iconic Joe DiMaggio (his great grandfather's cousin, to be exact). And this season, he's playing like he's got something to prove.

So far, Mattias has racked up 34 hits while batting an impressive .515, including nine home runs. But here's the stat that really turns heads: he's drawn over 20 walks while striking out just once. "The most impressive thing hitting is he has over 20 walks and one strikeout," Hedricks said. "He's a pretty physical kid who can hit to all fields."

Standing at 6-foot-3 and 191 pounds, this left-handed pitcher is also a force on the mound, already notching four saves this season. And if that's not enough, he leads the team in stolen bases. One college coach summed it up simply: "He's good good."

Mattias isn't the first athlete in his family to make waves at Dos Pueblos—his older brother was a standout player there and now competes in junior college baseball. But with three more years of high school ahead, Hedricks can't wait to see how far this freshman can go. "He can beat you 100 different ways," the coach said.

From his plate discipline to his power at the bat and his versatility on the field, Mattias Di Maggio is proving that some names are destined for greatness—and he's writing his own chapter.
