Monday's prep sports action delivered plenty of drama across the Mid-Illini Conference, with standout performances and shifting standings keeping fans on the edge of their seats.
East Peoria senior RJ Duncheon was the star of the day, dominating both on the mound and at the plate. The Illinois State recruit tossed a one-hitter with ten strikeouts as the Raiders blanked Morton 6-0 at Westwood Park. Not content with just shutting down the opposition, Duncheon also launched a home run to power his team to victory. The win pulls East Peoria (15-8, 7-2) into a three-way tie for second place with Morton (17-7, 7-2) and Metamora in what's shaping up to be a thrilling conference race.
Dunlap (21-4, 8-1) now sits alone atop the standings after a 4-1 win over visiting Washington. Meanwhile, Metamora (18-4, 7-2) extended its winning streak to nine games with a 7-4 decision over Limestone, keeping the pressure on the league leaders.
Other baseball winners on Monday included Normal Community, Normal West, Pekin, and Tremont, which clinched the Heart of Illinois Conference title with a 5-1 win at rival Deer Creek-Mackinaw—a statement victory for the program.
In a bittersweet note for East Peoria, while the Raiders celebrated baseball and softball wins, the basketball program received some tough news. Junior wingman Quinton Kitt, a 6-foot-6 University of Illinois recruit, will finish his high school career at a prep school, as confirmed by head coach Jarrett Brown. It's a big loss for the Raiders but a testament to Kitt's rising stock in the basketball world.
