Another exciting day of high school sports action unfolded on Wednesday, May 13, with standout performances and pivotal matchups across the region. Here's a look at the key results that had fans on the edge of their seats.
The boys volleyball season came to a close for NorthWood as they fell to SB St. Joseph in the first round of Sectional 4 at Northridge. Despite a valiant effort, the Panthers dropped the match 25-18, 25-19, 25-9, ending their inaugural varsity campaign with a 3-10 record. It was a season of growth and learning for the young program, and they'll look to build on this foundation for next year.
On the baseball diamond, Concord delivered a masterclass in pitching, edging out Mishawaka 1-0 in a classic pitchers' duel. The Minutemen seized control with a single run in the third inning, enough to claim sole possession of second place in the NLC. Alex Kridler led the charge at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a triple, while Jordan Flores crossed home plate for the game's only score. On the mound, Joey Hauger was dominant, tossing a complete seven-inning shutout with four hits allowed and nine strikeouts. Concord now stands at 14-4 overall and 8-3 in conference play.
Goshen showcased their offensive firepower with a seven-run explosion in the fourth inning, run-ruling Plymouth on the road. Jensen Meikle and Jaxon Miller each drove in two runs, with Meikle and Manny Pizana recording multi-hit games. Bray Hoag earned the win on the mound, throwing five strong innings, allowing just one hit, walking two, and striking out four. The RedHawks improve to 15-4 and 10-1 in the NLC, keeping their title hopes alive.
Northridge needed extra effort to pull away from Wawasee, scoring five runs in the seventh inning to secure a series split. Aveary Johnson was a force at the plate, going 3-for-5, while Hayden Gorball added a 2-for-4 performance. Lucas Eash drove in three runs, and Caleb Irwin knocked in two more. Mason Zimmerman earned the win with a complete-game effort, allowing just three hits and one unearned run while striking out seven over seven innings. Northridge moves to 9-10 overall and 5-6 in the NLC, while Wawasee drops to 2-14 and 1-10.
Warsaw stunned NorthWood at home, blanking the Panthers 10-0. Brady Weaver and Ean Bogan managed the only hits for NorthWood, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Tigers' dominant pitching and offense. NorthWood falls to 11-9 and 5-6 in the NLC.
In softball action, Mishawaka claimed the Northern Lakes Conference title with three games to spare, holding off Concord 11-9 in a thrilling contest. The Cavemen built a 7-0 lead by the fourth inning, but Concord mounted a comeback, cutting the deficit to 11-8 after six frames. The Minutemen managed just one run in the seventh as Mishawaka held on for the win. Kendall Hodge and Cheyenne Collins each drove in two runs, while Collins (3 hits), Serina Masuth (3), Hodge (2), and Esmeralda Perez (2) all enjoyed multi-hit games. Concord drops to 7-13 and 4-7 in the NLC.
Plymouth staged a dramatic comeback, scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to steal a win over Goshen. The game was marred by 10 combined errors, with Plymouth committing six. Harper Syslo drove in three runs, and Macy Burgos added two RBIs. Burgos, Emily Diaz, Nicole Leal, Mya Vivanco, and Abby Snyder each recorded two hits for the RedHawks. Goshen falls to 3-15 and 2-9 in the NLC.
